Hiring Employees for Small Businesses

In the early stages of small business ownership, you can often handle many of the responsibilities yourself, but as your company grows, you need new employees. Finding those employees is a rough task because you cannot offer the same benefits and perks as your larger competitors. Plus newspaper help wanted ads have gotten pricey and they don’t care if you have a small business or a large one. Some people like the idea of working for a smaller company because it has a homey feeling and they feel like they are helping. When looking for new employees, you must identify those that like the smaller companies and get their attention.

One way to find customers is at a dedicated job fair. Small Business coaching companies use job fairs as a way to help those that typically could not find a job, seek out employment opportunities. Many job fairs are free for employers because the founders know that getting jobs for those in the surrounding areas can help stimulate the economy. Hundreds of people with all types of backgrounds pass through the doors of the fair, which gives you access to people that might not look online or in the newspaper.

When you attend a job fair, business mentoring people suggest using a banner or sign with your company name or logo on it. This is a simple marketing ploy that shows those passing by your company name. Even if those people do not apply for a job, they will remember the name and want to learn more in the future. You should also bring business cards and give those cards to both potential employees and other businesses. If you have a website address, then include that on the business card for free web marketing. A list of potential questions to ask applicants is also helpful.

Job fairs are not the only way that small businesses find qualified applicants. A sign hung outside your office tells everyone that passes by that you are hiring. Adding an online application to your website is another way to find job seekers. The application goes directly to your email account, which lets you scroll through the applicants when you have the time. You can call those that you want for an interview and automatically reject applicants that are not qualified for the position. Online applications are easier to process than traditional paper applications that applicants deliver in person or through the mail.
