Small Business Startup Costs

Starting your own small business requires initial costs that you must pay upfront, before you ever make your first sale. Before you incorporate your business, you need a business plan. This plan is a document that lists every single detail about your future company. You have the option of using business coaching/mentoring classes, which teach you the basics, creating your own plan from scratch, or basing your business plan on free templates readily available online. The plan spends quite a bit of time on the start-up costs, as well as the costs that you might find later on.

One of your highest initial start-up costs involves your business location. Many companies start as a home-based businesses because it saves money and keeps start-up costs down. You can write off part of your home costs on your taxes, including energy bills, internet bills, and rental costs. Since you use an area of your home as your place of business, those are business expenses. The total amount you can write off varies, depending on how much time you spend working at home. You must determine how much of each cost goes towards your business expenses.

When you create a small business away from home, your startup costs rise. You cannot use your living room or extra bedroom, but need a dedicated office or storefront. You cannot use your own furnishings because you must purchase furnishings for your office. Factor in the cost of your rental location when determining your startup costs. In general, the larger your space is, the more you spend in rental costs. You must also determine the cost of electric and utility bills, as well as insurance on the property. If a customer is injured on-site and you do not have the proper insurance, you might lose your business in a lawsuit.

Business coaching classes offer other things that you might not think that you need. This includes displays for the items you sell, office furniture, computers, lighting fixtures, changing rooms in clothing stores, and floor coverings. If you need merchant services for processing credit cards, then you also need a dedicated phone line, or internet. The cost of internet and phone causes a further increase in your startup costs. You also need to have an online presence which is not too cumbersome if you go with the new co-op web marketing plan. No matter where you are at it is never a bad idea to map out a plan. A business plan covers everything your business could possibly need, right down to the phones you use on-site. This gives you a general idea of how much you need upfront.
