Successful organizations have a mission, vision and a set of goals identified in order to steer the enterprise toward the most profitable direction. Every employee within a company plays an essential role in order to effectively move towards a specific goal. While every team member is responsible for his or her duties and responsibilities at an individual level, it is of course imperative that all staff members work as a united force in order to drive the organization towards success.
Improving Communication, Collaboration and Trust
Communication, collaboration and trust are key qualities productive teams possess. No team can possess these attributes naturally as these have to be developed and learned. There are a number of team building activities to help teams learn the nuances and importance of teamwork. Team building activities can improve goal unification significantly among company staff. The purpose of team building activities is to develop strong interpersonal relationships which help to bond the team closer together while merging their focus.
Collaborative team building activities can draw people together in a way that the everyday working environment usually cannot. Increased collaboration can lead to a shared feeling of achievement. With improved collaboration employees will feel more positive when they come together to share knowledge, discuss different options or give and receive important feedback. A couple of simple team building activities are listed below.
Blindfolds Leads – Communication and Trust Activity
A blindfolded person is led by a sighted person, at first across a level grass area, then around increasingly complex soft obstacles such as through a pattern of balls or round markers. Leading can be with physical contact at first, progressing to voice leading only. The sighted person is well placed to support the person and to watch out for their safety. This activity can take 15-30 minutes. (If there’s time, switch roles and repeat.) Take a few moments at the end of the exercise for a group debrief, allowing both leaders and followers to share what their experience was like in each role.
Cocktail Party Speed Networking – Communication and Collaboration Activity
Pair up team members and give them two minutes to talk to each other about their hobbies, families, and life outside work. At the end of two minutes, move people on so that they are talking to another colleague for the next two minutes. Continue until everyone has spoken to every other member of the team. Once the activity is complete, ask a few people to state something interesting they learned from the activity or about one of the team members they spoke to.
The most successful leaders today seem to have a well-developed character of resilience, creativity and innovation in order to have the courage to do whatever it takes to persevere a period of survival and stabilization. Volatile economic conditions and other external pressures are creating internal stress within enterprises all over the world. To be an effective leader against this backdrop, one must be developed enough to rebound from everyday pressures and take the necessary steps if they wish to thrive and create a sustainable future for their organization. A valuable leader has the ability to refocus, inspire and continuously innovate with their teams despite external challenges. This is a key to leading and/or developing a team of people for a future of success, profit and sustainability.
